Full Description
Of Shadow and Light: An Odyssey in Eastern Crete
Some journeys simply show you landscapes; this one tells a story. A story of resilience, beauty, and vibrant life.
Your journey begins at your hotel's doorstep. Leave the worries of driving behind: our minibus awaits to take you to the small port of Plaka, where the blue of the Cretan Sea becomes mesmerizing.
The Crossing into Silence
In Plaka, you embark on a short but intense crossing. It was here that, for decades, "exiles" began their final journey to the fortress island of Spinalonga. By setting foot on the island, you walk in the footsteps of history.
Explore the island at your own pace (self-guided tour). Wander through the deserted streets, admire the stone facades, and let the wind whisper tales of those who once lived here. For those who wish to uncover the city's deepest secrets, a guided tour is available. It's a place suspended in time, imbued with an emotion found nowhere else.
Agios Nikolaos: The Pearl of the Gulf
After this historical immersion, the scenery changes. We set sail for Agios Nikolaos, the "Saint-Tropez" of Crete, famous for its bottomless lake, Lake Voulismeni, connected to the sea.
Lunch is at your leisure: this is your moment of freedom. The town abounds with quaint tavernas and modern restaurants. Whether you dream of fresh fish by the water or a quick gyro, the choice is yours.
Afternoon: Your Adventure is Yours
The rest of the day unfolds according to your desires, with two options:
The "Stroll and Shop" Option: Lose yourself in the shopping streets, discover local crafts, gold jewelry, or enjoy a frappé while watching the boats bobbing in the harbor.
The "Memory and Culture" Option: Step inside the Archaeological Museum, a true gem of the city. Recently renovated, it houses treasures spanning from the Neolithic era to Roman ruins. With over 1,500 vases and gold ornaments dating back to ancient Crete, you'll delve into 4,000 years of Eastern civilization (the museum currently offers fascinating temporary exhibitions showcasing its finest pieces).
Return in Complete Peace of Mind
Once your souvenirs (and bags) are full, we'll meet back at the meeting point. Settle comfortably into our minibus: we'll take you directly back to your hotel. All you have to do is close your eyes and relive this day of contrasts, between the sacred melancholy of Spinalonga and the sunny brilliance of Agios Nikolaos.
